The Nutcracker 2019 - Photos from VBT | Houston, Katy & Fulshear Ballet Photographer

When I say I could photograph dancers all day, I mean it. I find dancers to have such strength, determination and beauty that it translates so well to the camera.

If you by chance are not familiar with how I got into photographing dancers, I’ll take a quick step back. I danced for this very same company from fifth grade through high school. I aspired to be a professional ballerina and essential lived and breathed dance most of those years.

I still have a huge passion for dance. I take classes when I can, go to performances, have daughters who have started dancing and have the privilege of working with Victoria Ballet Theatre a few times each year. That last part is a dream come true!

I won’t lie, photographing dancers on a stage, is not for the faint of heart. It is challenging to say the least. It is sports photography, in the dark with the added element of getting the dancers when they hit the steps, sometimes multiple dancers in unison ideally, and you only have one chance.

These images are from the 2019 production of The Nutcracker. It is probably one of the best known ballets out there. It is performed by many companies annually. I personally love the ballet. It has so much to offer the audience. It has some beautiful corpse de ballet pieces, and I love a good corp de ballet. It has the drama and excitement of the battle scene. Then it is all topped off with a second act that is full of magic, excitement and stunning costumes. Additionally, the fact we all know the music and get excited when we hear it around the holidays just makes it a lovely ballet that is perfect for the entire family. My girls love to go each year!

Well, I’ve photographed VBT’s The Nutcracker a few years now, and this year did not disappoint. I wanted to share a bit more from the show on the blog. I hope to do so more often. These are just too good to keep to myself.
