When it comes to the ballet, many people imagine tutus and sequins. Yes, that has its place for sure. However, ballet has evolved, and today it is very common to see new pieces by choreographers who may not be household names. At least not yet. The restrictions on movement in what is classified as ballet has evolved and today mixed reps usually include contemporary pieces that will leave you in awe by how a body can move and how creative one can be.

Each fall, Victoria Ballet Theatre puts on a production of new pieces that includes pieces by emerging choreographers. I love mixed rep shows, they are exciting and tend to have several shorter pieces giving audiences a large variance between pieces. Ensuring a little something for everyone to enjoy.

I never know what I am walking into when I photograph Victoria Ballet Theatre’s fall show. 2019 was one for the books. The pieces were so strong and featured the dancers in ways that accentuate the diversity of the entire company.

Below are some highlights because I can’t post them all, as much as I might want to.
